NUtech Ventures honors UNL faculty

NUtech Ventures recognized University of Nebraska-Lincoln innovators and their promising technologies during a recent luncheon.
Nearly 170 people attended the Oct. 6 event, including UNL faculty who have participated in the technology development and commercialization process, along with administrators, board members and staff who have supported the work.
NUtech Ventures is the intellectual property and technology commercialization unit of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. NUTech’s mission is to facilitate the commercialization and practical use of innovations generated through the research activities of UNL to promote economic development and improve quality of life.
Awards included:
The Emerging Innovator of the Year award, which was presented to Sri Kidambi, assistant professor of chemical and molecular engineering, for his work to develop a structured environment for cancer cells to grow.
The Breakthrough Innovation of the Year award, which was presented to Hiep Vu, Fernando Osorio, Asit Pattnaik and Fangrui Ma for their PRSS Vaccine. The PRSS Vaccine creates a method for the development of a porcine reproductive and respiratory virus vaccine strain capable of inducing broad protection. Current vaccines on the market only protect against a specific strain of the virus, which costs the swine industry more than $640 million a year.
The Serial Innovator award, which was presented to George Graef, professor of agronomy and horticulture, for his extensive market use of use high-yield soybean varieties around the world.
The Innovator of the Year award, which was presented to Paul Blum, professor of biological sciences, for advancing novel research into significant commercial utilization. Blum’s innovations make ethanol less expensive to produce and help progress hydrogen as a clean energy source.
